Hands-in-the-Hanger-with-Headphones
Hands-in-the-Hanger is a weekly, practice-led making and mending program developed as part of the Circular Campus to Community collaboration between RMIT University and Merri‑bek City Council. Running from April to July 2026 at RMIT’s Brunswick campus, the initiative is open to all RMIT students and staff, as well as anyone living, working, or visiting the Merri‑bek area.
Designed originally to follow a similar structure to the Shut Up and Write methodology—adapted here to support making-based outcomes rather than writing—the sessions were intended to provide focused time and gentle accountability for creative work, analogous to how Shut Up and Write supports scholarly articles, theses, and book chapters.
While the use of headphones remains an option for anyone seeking to focus solely on the act of making, most participants in the early sessions have opted for conversation, where a relaxed, companionable quietness provides a dedicated time and place for shared, collective practice.
